Futurpreneur
My first content role post-journalism was a pivot in more ways than one, taking me from an alt-weekly newsroom’s particular brand of lawlessness to the world of 9:05 am Teams calls. But, fully entrusted with the voice of a brand for the first time—and with the stories and aspirations of countless young entrepreneurs across Canada—I soon found myself flourishing.
At Futurpreneur, Canada’s only national non-profit offering support and mentorship to aspiring entrepreneurs 18-39, I was the MarCom team’s dedicated writer. And write I did, from spearheading the comms for marquee program launches (like the Black Entrepreneur Startup Program, a $100-million partnership with RBC) to social blurbs for business workshops in rural Manitoba. Thought leadership pieces for upper management, releases for partnerships with provincial governments and banks, social posts, lead gen copy, newsletter blasts, carefully sculpted profiles of our “YEs” and mentors—I did it all (while giving my rudimentary French a real workout).
But tiny teams mean many hats, and an average day at FP could also involve building out social media strategy for our many programs, optimizing our latest batch of Meta ads and lead capture landing pages, designing entire suites of graphic assets, editing video, consulting on a company-wide design overhaul, and trying to figure out where the heck that logo lockup we last used three years ago went.
